A training seminar on “Cultural heritage sites preservation in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast” was held at Nizhny Novgorod ecclesiastical seminary on February 27, 2014, with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Georgy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas. It was organized for rural deans of Nizhny Novgorod diocesan Okrugs, church rectors and monastery abbots serving at such sites.
The meeting was opened by Archpriest Artemiy Parshin, Nizhny Novgorod diocese administrative manager assistant. “At the beginning of this year the cultural heritage sites legislation grew harsh. In Nizhny Novgorod Oblast there are examples of church restoration in contravention of the law. Therefore, we asked the heads of the regional management of the State Service for Cultural Heritage Sites Preservation and representatives of restorers association to hold this seminar”, he said.
Igor Petrov, assistant manager of the regional department for the State Service for Cultural Heritage Sites Preservation reported that one third of the general number of cultural heritage sites in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast are of religious nature; more than 520 of them are in charge of the Russian Orthodox Church, the biggest owner of the cultural heritage assets. Therefore, it is important to restorethem in accordance with the active law. He added that in recent years the Russian Orthodox Church had spent a lot of money on restoring such sites. The reporter dwelt on restoration of the Pechersky Holy Ascension monastery, Nizhny Novgorod Holy Annunciation monastery and Zheltovodsky Makaryev Convent of the Holy Trinity as well as the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Nizhny Novgorod and the Cathedral of Resurrection in Arzamas within the last three years.
