On March 2, Cheesefare Sunday, His Eminence Metropolitan Georgy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas celebrated the Great Vespers and the Rite of Mutual Forgiveness at the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Nizhny Novgorod. Co-celebrating with His Eminence was Bishop Iliya of Balakhna, vicar of Nizhny Novgorod diocese; Archpriest Serguiy Matveev, rector of the Cathedral; and other clerics of the city. Praying at the divine service were students of Nizhny Novgorod spiritual schools and a great deal of the faithful. The Rite of Mutual Forgiveness marked the beginning of the Great Lent.

In his homily the Primate of Nizhny Novgorod Metropolia remimded the congregation of the Fallal of Adam and Eve and called the devotees to penance. “We start the Great Lent. It is time we cleanse our souls from passions and call to the Lord”, His Eminence said.

At the end of the divine service Metropolitan Georgy asked the congregation for forgiveness.
